Western Nevada Development District (WNDD) is proud to announce that it has been awarded a 2019 EPA Brownfields Grant that will target the assessment and cleanup of community gateways, an industrial park, the downtown corridor and mine scarred areas in Lovelock and Pershing County.
The grant is part of the EPA’s Brownfields Program which provides grants and technical assistance to communities, states, tribes and others to assess, safely clean up and sustainably reuse contaminated properties. Maximum grant awards are $600,000 which WNDD received for its analysis and identification of hazardous or blighted areas negatively impacting the areas.
The project will yield economic and community benefits by accomplishing and supporting economic development and community revitalization in alignment with Pershing County Economic Development Strategic and Revitalization Plan.
This will be achieved freeing up key lands that are already zoned for development, where infrastructure (water, sewer, and transportation) is immediately available; and will reduce sprawl by infilling vacant lots within the City’s limits. Additionally, the project will provide incentives for property owners to address contamination by reducing uncertainties related to cleanup. WNDD will assist to assess and manage the funds to create better gateways to the community and foster civic pride.

‘Connecting Nevada for a Stronger Economy’

4th Nevada Economic Development Conference Set for Reno Aug. 20-22
(Carson City, NV) — The Fourth Annual Nevada Economic Development Conference will explore the ideas, programs and business connections that are defining the new Nevada economy from Aug. 20-22, 2018 at the Atlantis Casino & Resort in Reno, NV.
The multi-track conference is presented by the Western Nevada Development District and the newly-formed Nevada Economic Development Association.
“Our theme is ‘Connecting Nevada for a Stronger Economy’ and will provide opportunities for a broad section of professionals to present and share what is happening in a dynamic, changing Nevada economy,” said Jenifer Rose, Conference Chair and Western Nevada Development District Board member. “This conference will take people inside Nevada’s great business re-birth; the new companies, new ideas and knowledge base that is shaping a new future.”
The conference is a perfect venue for economic developers, business owners, utility managers, financial leaders, commercial real estate professionals, transportation managers, elected officials, farm and ranch owners, manufacturers and mining leaders to connect with Nevada’s new business development and expansion network, Rose said.
Tracks for the conference, Tuesday, Aug. 21 and Wednesday, Aug. 22, include Agribusiness, Economic Development, Manufacturing, Transportation/Infrastructure and Workforce Development. The $175 ($200 after July 6) cost before July 6 includes opening sessions, lunch with keynote speakers and Exhibit Hall Reception. A one-day conference pass is $125 ($150 after July 6).
A Pre-Conference Tour and workshop, Connecting Nevada to the Global Economy, on Aug. 20 will visit the SWITCH facility located at the Reno Tahoe Industrial Center. There is a separate registration fee of $75 for this portion of the conference ($100 after July 6) which includes lunch and transportation.
Continuing this year is the Stronger Economies Awards and Accolades Program which will recognize outstanding marketing materials and tools used for attracting and retaining business. The newly added Anthony Lopez Economic Development Professional Award will recognize outstanding achievements by an individual who has made significant contributions to economic development efforts in Nevada. Robots and Artificial Intelligence Poised to Man 60 Percent of Nevada Jobs by 2035?
Nevada Economic Development Conference to highlight state’s susceptibility to automation and job loss; explores beating the odds
(Carson City, Nev., August 8, 2017) – In its ongoing campaign to educate and prepare Nevada businesses and community members on the rapidly changing economic environment within the Silver State, the Nevada Economic Development Conference (NVEDC) scheduled for Sept. 11-13 will highlight a discussion into the future of job loss due to technological advances and automation. Dr. Johannes Moenius and Dr. Jess Chen, both from the University of the Redlands, will address these issues and more during their session on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).
While past analysis of job loss due to automation has focused on the Rust Belt, new research from Moenius and Chen shows that coming decades will see high concentrations of job loss in low-wage positions such as food preparation, office/administration and sales. It is estimated that by 2035, more than half of U.S. jobs will be susceptible to automation. Further, the Las Vegas and Reno Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) could see job losses of up to 65%, due to their dependency on these lower income positions.
Moenius, the founding director, and Chen, faculty fellow, of the Institute for Spatial Economic Analysis (ISEA) at the University of Redlands, believe that the probability of automation has been greatly underestimated over the years, and that a fresh approach to analysis needed to be taken. The University of Redlands team has studied the topics at length and has made some striking conclusions. Unlike previous studies, their efforts show that regions such as Las Vegas are most susceptible to automation because of their high share and dependency on low-wage paying jobs. It is surmised that in the future, the already low-wage earners, such as food servers and clerical positions, will be pushed out of the market by highly adaptive and cost effective artificial intelligence.
Moenius and Chen will address these issues and more during their NVEDC topic discussion: The Future Workforce – Will Robots & Drones Replace Humans. They will explore why Las Vegas and positions throughout the region will be hit particularly hard, what businesses will be impacted the most, and how economic developers and local governments can prepare for the future.
The NVEDC is open to anyone interested in the Nevada’s economy and will be held at the UNLV Student Union Sept. 11- 13. The conference will feature exclusive tours and track sessions that include the leading experts in the fields of agribusiness, economic development, energy, infrastructure/transportation, manufacturing, tourism/gaming and workforce development.
